About The Book

This book is the first volume in a documentary series “Ukraine‒Europe, 1921‒1939.” It is dedicated to the life, activities, and tragic fate of Oleksandr Shumsky (1890-1946), one of the leaders of the Ukrainian national Communism in the 1920s who was later arrested and killed by the Soviet secret police. This book has been co-published by Ukraina Moderna, supported by a Ukrainian donor Victor Rybchuk and by the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society at the CIUS.

Yurii Shapoval is senior researcher at the Institute of Ethnic and Political Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He is a specialist on Ukrainian Soviet history.
