Description
The book Від країни козаків до країни селян: Україна на видноколі Заходу у ХVІ–ХІХ ст. [From the Land of the Cossacks to the Land of the Peasants: Ukraine on the Horizon of the West in the 16th to 19th Centuries] is a Ukrainian translation of a German-language monograph by eminent Swiss historian of Eastern Europe Andreas Kappeler. Originally published in 2020 under the title Vom Land Der Kosaken Zum Land Der Bauern: Die Ukraine Im Horizont Des Westens Vom 16. Bis 19. Jahrhundert, Kappeler’s book is not yet available in the English translation. This monograph presents a panoramic view of the various interpretations of Ukraine presented in Western European publications and periodicals starting from the 16th century, when the Cossacks and the “Cossack Host” were famous throughout Europe and discussed in the highest military and government circles of many European states. Kappeler presents a meticulously researched, but at the same time very readable and accessible to a broad readership, portrayal of how the West viewed and attempted to understand Ukraine throughout the centuries of the modern era. Of particular interest are the numerous descriptions of Ukraine by Western travelers and the analysis of such topics as the fascination of Western European writers and artists of the Romantic era with the legends about the life of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, and other topics.
This sizable hardcover edition has been published as volume 6 of the Ukrainian Historiography in the West monograph series published in Ukraine by the Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research (University of Alberta) and the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society in Lviv.
