Description

Established in the mid eleventh century, the Kyivan Caves Monastery is one of Ukraine’s most important spiritual and cultural centres. The current book (publication of which was supported by a grant from the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies) is an extensive collection of previously unpublished Soviet and German archival documents pertaining to the dramatic events that took place in the monastery during World War II, including the destruction of its main church, the Dormition Cathedral, by Soviet partisans. This 1,200-page book also contains three detailed research papers discussing various aspects of the monastery’s history during World War II.
