Description

The diary of the eminent historian Myron Korduba (one of the most prominent students of Mykhailo Hrushevsky) is an invaluable eye-witness account of the period of Ukraine’s struggle for independence in 1917-21, particularly regarding the revolutionary events in western Ukraine.  This diary sheds light on the international context of the Ukrainian struggle for Galicia in 1917-23 as well as on the little known details of the local events. Of particular importance is Korduba’s insider’s perspective on a number of clandestine Ukrainian state and educational institutions, such as the Collegium of the Plenipotentiaries of the Dictatorship of the Western Ukrainian National Republic or the Ukrainian Underground University. The diary is also an important source for the study of Galician political thought during the period of Ukraine’s struggle for independence and the first years after it ended. This 690-page volume includes two extensive introductions about Myron Korduba and about his diary as a historical source.
