The Conduct of Official Business by Department and Desk for More Efficient Processing and for the Precise Observance of the Procedure Prescribed in Her Imperial Majesty’s Supreme Instructions on the Classification of Official Business by Subject, compiled by Oleksandr Pankieiev and presented in this edition, is a unique source on the history of office procedure and chancery hierarchy in southern Ukraine and the Russian Empire in the second half of the eighteenth century.

The document is a draft on the establishment of office procedure in the institutions of the Katerynoslav vicegerency according to the norms of the administrative and territorial reform of 1775. It also includes forms of documents that were to constitute the basis of office procedure in local institutions.

The publication also discusses the history of creations of the document in the historical context of events in southern Ukraine during the second half of the eighteenth century. The time when the region was integrated into the political body of the Russian Empire.
