These are the questions that the authors address in their examination of the genesis of Stalinism in the economy, ideology, and culture of Ukraine. Among the topics covered: the rise and fall of the New Economic Policy in Ukraine, the formation of a command-administrative model for the economy, the “ideological struggle,” the cult of personality, Ukrainization in the 1920s and the assault on Ukrainian culture in the 1930s, and the arrest and repression of scholars and cultural figures.
