During the first decades following World War II, at the time when the policies of Russification were enforced by the Communist regime in the Soviet Ukraine and when many Ukrainian writers and literary translators were persecuted, a small group of Ukrainian émigré intellectuals in Western Europe and North America established the Ukrainian Shakespeare Society and embarked upon an ambitious plan of publishing a series of new Ukrainian translations of Shakespeare’s canonical works. Their efforts resulted in remarkable publications of some masterful literary translations as well as pertinent Shakespeare scholarship. These editions ended up having an impact not only on the Ukrainian émigré community, but also in the Soviet-dominated Ukraine.

The new extensive 3-volume edition entitled Шекспір українською по той бік Залізної Завіси [Shakespeare in Ukrainian on the Other Side of the Iron Curtain], edited by Marko Robert Stech and published in Kyiv in the CIUS-sponsored series Україна і світ: Перехрестя культур [Ukraine and the World: The Crossroads of Cultures], gathers together the most important accomplishments of the Ukrainian émigré Shakespeare experts. The nearly 900-page-long and richly illustrated volume 1 of this edition contains Teodosii Osmachka’s brilliant translations of The Tragedy of Macbeth (in two variants) and Henri IV, accompanied by introductory essays about these plays by Ihor Kostetsky, as well as Irena Makaryk’s text about Les Kurbas’s revolutionary staging of Macbeth in the Berezil theatre, a personal correspondence of the key members of the Ukrainian Shakespeare Society, and many other materials that showcase the rich history of the Ukrainian émigré Shakespeariana.
